We are living in hard times of global recession that left a lot of people with no jobs. However, these are times that push the human wit, inventiveness and commitment.
From the Isle of Wight, in the UK, we have heard about some friends trying to make a living in the hard world of the textile industry. Apparently, nothing new up to this point: another clothing brand within the .com network. Still, the difference is made when they add concepts like sustainability, eco-materials, free-trade and renewable energies to the usual communication, design and dialogue.
In early 2008, brothers Rob and Martin Drake-Knight took the say «if you can’t find a job, make one» into practice and with 200 pounds they had saved they founded Rapanui Clothing. As environmentally committed surfers and worried about the pollution growing in their surf spots due to climate changes and human action, they decided to put in practice their ideals and ethics. Rapanui clothes are made in a shop powered by windmill energy, fabrics manufactured out of organic cotton, bamboo and hemp and they also introduce a traceablity tool with which the final customer can chase the evolution of the garment from material collection to end product, so they can be empowered to make an informed decision as committed shoppers, supporting ethic practices as well.
Paraphrasing their own words «It’s not just about clothes, it’s also about wearing what you believe in. We want to inspire people to think about the environment in their wider lifestyle».
These kids are a real example on how to link sustainability to profitability, commitment between society and environment. They have made reality some of those big words we use to give nice speeches and feel good about ourselves.
We want to wish you the best of lucks Rapanui and encourage you, reader, to check out their site and let them know what you think about their idea.
